Alexander Florensky
Born in Leningrad in 1960.
Studied at the Leningrad Vera Mukhina Higher College of Art and Design (ceramics department) from 1977 to 1982.
One of the organizers of the Mitki, a famous group of Leningrad-Petersburg artists (1985–2005). Creator of the animated films Mitki-Mayer (1992), Russian Album (2001, jointly with Maria Yakushina) and Trophy Films (2003, jointly with Olga Florenskaya). Participant in and prize-winner of many national and international film festivals (1993–2005). Organizer of the book publishers Mitkilibris (1994), originator of many publishing projects. One of the organizers and curators of the gallery Mitki-VKhUTEMAS in Saint Petersburg (1997–2005).
Chief artist and curator of the Petersburg Addresses magazine keeping record of eternal values (2003–04). Creator of the contemporary art department of the Tsarskoye Selo Collection museum (2006–08). Since 1994 he has worked in collaboration with his wife Olga Florenskaya on the large-scale joint projects, including Movement Towards Iye, Russian Patent, Local Time, Moveable Bestiary, Russian Trophy and Wilhelm Winter's Universal Museum.
In 2004 Florensky and fellow artist Ivan Sotnikov founded the Society of Lovers of Painting and Drawing. In 2008 he and the printer Dmitry Bogayenko established the B&F studio producing silk-screen prints by hand. He is a collector of works by contemporary Russian and Georgian artists. Lives and works in Saint Petersburg and Tbilisi, while travelling extensively. Member of the Saint Petersburg Artists’ Union since 1988.
His works can be found in the State Hermitage, State Russian Museum, State Tretyakov Gallery, State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts and museums in many other Russian cities (Nizhny Novgorod, Norilsk, Krasnoyarsk, Omsk, Murmansk, Yaroslavl, Arkhangelsk, Novosibirsk, Perm, Saratov, Kaliningrad, Tolyatti and more), as well as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Helsinki Art Museum and Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in the Finnish capital.
