The Tuvans, or Tuvinians, are a small ethnic group living in the Republic of Tuva, which is located in southern Siberia, in the basin of the Upper Yenisei. The traditional culture of the Tuvan people, social relations and moral principles operating in the community, difficult living conditions, nomadic pastoralism, hunting, domestic crafts and a harsh natural environment – all those elements provided rich material for the creation of fairy stories, heroic tales of great champions, songs, riddles, proverbs and sayings that were lovingly preserved and passed down by tale-tellers from generation to generation.
Work on the first copy of this bibliophilic edition of Khan Ton Aralchyn was completed in 2023.

The heroic epic Khan Ton Aralchyn was written down in 1946 as related by the bard Albanchy Sata in the settlement of Khondergei in the Dzun-Khemchiksky district of what was then the Tuvan Autonomous Region. It tells of the eponymous valiant youth who possesses superhuman powers, his travels, fights with monsters and foreign enemies, and his pursuit of his distant bride.
The text of the tale has been printed on a 19th-century Dingler hand press. An inseparable element of the book’s design is the archaeological graphics depicting artefacts found during excavations of Tuvan burial mounds from the Scythian period that are now kept in the State Hermitage Museum.

The printed text of the epic is accompanied by 16 illustrations superbly executed in the etching technique by the sculptor, jeweller and graphic artist Dashi Namdakov, Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation, People’s Artist of Buryatia. Full Member of the Russian Academy of Arts. Dashi’s family belongs to an ancient line of skilled metalworkers (darkhans) that produced the finest jewellers, craftsmen and artists.
Dashi Namdakov’s sculptures, jewellery, graphic art and tapestries have a strikingly unique and distinctive style founded upon elements of ethnic culture, the traditions of Central Asia and Buddhist motifs.
The artist’s works can be found in the stocks of the State Hermitage and Russian Ethnographic Museum in Saint Petersburg, the Museum of Oriental Art and Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow, as well as museums and private collections in Germany, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Finland, Japan, the USA and Taiwan.
The artist’s works can be found in the stocks of the State Hermitage and Russian Ethnographic Museum in Saint Petersburg, the Museum of Oriental Art and Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow, as well as museums and private collections in Germany, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Finland, Japan, the USA and Taiwan.
The endpapers of the book are made of gabardine printed with images of the Sulek petroglyphs (rock drawings from the 2nd millennium BC in the southern Siberian Republic of Khakassia) — an ensemble of figurative art that has been studied for many years and become world-famous on account of the accompanying runic inscriptions and marvellous engraved drawings dating from the Middle Ages.
The cover has been made using French leather. The front is adorned with an original metal relief depicting the central figure of the tale, Khan Ton Aralchyn, in profile. The relief was made by the artist Dashi Namdakov from bronze with further gilding and patination.
Each copy of the book comes in a case finished with fabric.
