The text of the hand-made publication Aspects of Armenian Poetry was printed on a 19th-century German Dingler hand press using the Bodoni typeface in Russian and Armenian.
This anthology is a journey together with Marina Azizyan, the creator of the illustrations, through her life, from the vivid impressions of childhood, sounds and smells, to her mature perceptions.
In the process of working on the book, the artist carefully read the poetic texts that spoke familiarly to her heart and blood, absorbed the finest examples of Armenian miniatures and the architecture of mediaeval Armenian and Iran. She recollected her impressions of travels around Armenian, of the home of the architect Rafo Israyelian, his drawings and designs.
In the process of working on the book, the artist carefully read the poetic texts that spoke familiarly to her heart and blood, absorbed the finest examples of Armenian miniatures and the architecture of mediaeval Armenian and Iran. She recollected her impressions of travels around Armenian, of the home of the architect Rafo Israyelian, his drawings and designs.
While working on the images, Marina listened to mediaeval Armenian canticles and the music of contemporary Armenian composers. She “pulled from memory” the smells of an Armenian market, the warmth of domestic donkeys, the rustling of grass, the babbling coolness of streams running down from the mountains, the image of the Virgin Mary with sincere bottomless eyes, brightly coloured fantastic birds living to glorify the Lord, the diverse flora of springtime meadows…
The book contains 21 illustrations and 20 decorative initials of the Armenian alphabet executed in a mixed technique.

The decorative cover was created using textile and satin-stitch embroidery to designs made by the book’s artist, Marina Azizyan.
Each copy of the book comes in a case finished with fabric.
