THE GONZAGA CAMEO
The fascinating story of a rarity from Classical Antiquity, one of the most celebrated masterpieces and rarest examples of ancient glyptic art – the Gonzaga Cameo. The text was written by Oleg Yakovlevich Neverov, Candidate of Historical Sciences, art historian, leading researcher in the State Hermitage’s Department of Classical Antiquity, keeper of the collection of ancient carved stones.

The cameo is a double portrait of the deified Hellenistic rulers of Egypt, a married couple who were also brother and sister – Ptolemy II Philadelphus and Arsinoë II. It was made by an unknown craftsman in the Egyptian city of Alexandria in the 3rd century BC and is named in honour of its first known owner, Marchese Francesco II Gonzaga, a Renaissance patron of the arts and ruler of the Italian city of Mantua.
The text is set in the Garamond font. The book contains 25 photographs.
The cover is decorated with gold embossing and an inset depicting the cameo. It comes with a hand-made fabric case.
