Viktor Pavlov (1934-2002)

Born in Leningrad, USSR in 1934. Died in St Petersburg, Russia in 2002.

Graduated in 1962 from the Theory and History of Art Faculty of the Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.

Worked at the State Hermitage from 1956, initially in the Department of Western European Fine Art, later the Department of the History of Primitive Culture, and then the Chief Architect’s Department at the State Hermitage Museum. Head of the Exhibition-Design Department at from 1988 and Chief Artist of the Hermitage from 1992. Over the many years that he worked for the country’s largest museum, Pavlov took part in organizing and designing more than 500 exhibitions at the Hermitage, as well as at other museums and exhibition spaces in Russia and abroad. He designed numerous books and albums on art, as well as prospectuses, booklets, and posters. He was awarded the medal ‘For Services to the Fatherland’ (2nd class) in 1996.

Viktor Pavlov was also well-known as a talented painter and graphic artist. His works can be found in museums and private collections in Russia and abroad.
