This bibliophilic publication of The Sleeping Beauty was created as part of a unique joint project with Russia’s State Academic Bolshoi Theatre. Nobody previously had ever come up with the idea of illustrating a musical score. For the first time in the history of book-printing worldwide, a work was produced that combined the art forms of book, music and theatre.

The Sleeping Beauty is an outstanding work in the history of world choreography. The ballet occupies a leading position among the masterpieces of Russian ballet heritage and is a key element in the Bolshoi Theatre “brand”. The idea of creating the ballet came from Prince Ivan Vsevolozhsky, Director of the Imperial Theatres. The libretto, written jointly with the great choreographer Marius Petipa, who was invited to implement the project, was based on one of the most popular fairy tales by the 17th-century author Charles Perrault – La Belle au bois dormant.

The publication is made particularly valuable by the 31 manuscript pages of the score reproduced calligraphically by the artist Denis Lotarev. The source that he used was the score of the ballet The Sleeping Beauty from the Complete Collected Works of Tchaikovsky (Vol. 57, Moscow: Muzgiz, 1954).
The text of the libretto was printed on a 19th-century Dingler hand press.

The book contains 19 original pictures created in a mixed technique by the well-known Saint Petersburg artist Marina Azizian.
The book is covered with a creamy beige-coloured silk taffeta. The front cover is embellished with an appliqué depicting the Lilac Fairy in a boat and embroidery using bugles, beads, gold and silver thread that were also made by the artist.
The book has a storage case decorated with fabric.
